These photographs were taken on a 3-day, theatrical exploration of what “memory” meant to each performer and the director himself. Be it, its forgetting or a remembrance. Real or false. new or old. How does one capture its essence in a single wistful gesture or perhaps a narrative? How does one replay a memory with an array or a lack of any emotion, to an audience? How do you remember it, each time you do? How and why does it change?
However hard I tried to only observe and/or be the audience, I could not refrain from interjection at times – a session such as this, can be truly revealing and overwhelming. It brought about memories of my own, sometimes associated with the performers’, sometimes not. More so, our memories, however trivial, make us not so different from the other. It is only the interpretation of a memory or the lack of it, which makes us who we are and want to be. Or even better put by Sheeba Chaddha, was the expression – ‘We are, what we forget’.
THE BLUE MUG is an original theatrical creation inspired by the clinical essays of Oliver Sacks- The Man who mistook his Wife for a Hat. Directed by Atul Kumar and performed by Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Sheeba Chadha, Konkona Sen Sharma and Munish Bhardawaj. All of whom are considered to be the finest of actors and directors in the country.
